You can call him Kal
(Old
article)
Kal
Penn has a dream. When he goes up to get his Oscar, he’d like to
say to the world: “I’m Kalpen Modi and there’s nothing you can
do about it.” More about his name in a moment.
But
if you’re saying Kalpen Modi who?, or even Kal Penn who?, just
wait a few weeks. He’s going to be all over the place this
season, sharing marquee space with the likes of American
heartthrobs Ashton Kutcher and Jamie Kennedy. Get ready to
welcome the first true-blue Indian American Hollywood star…well,
a teen star, to start with.
This summer, he stars as Kumar
in the teen flick Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, a major
studio film that for the first time, puts an Indian character in
a mainstream milieu, with a nude scene to boot (see box). Also
in the offing are Son of the Mask, the sequel to the 199?
blockbuster and Jim Carrey starrer The Mask, where Penn plays
Jorge, a key supporting role; and A Lot Like Love, where he
partners Ashton Kutcher (Dude, Where’s My Car?; That 70s Show)
as his best friend.
Kal Penn has already been noticed
in Indian American films like American Desi, the biggest desi
hit in the US so far; and Where’s The Party, Yaar? In mainstream
American films, he’s known for playing Taj (full name: Taj Mahal
Badalandabad) in the cult teen film National Lampoon’s Van
Wilder. |
